Carmen Magem Prat was born in St. Vicenç de Castellet (Barcelona). Her artistic training began at the Artistic Circle of Manresa, continuing her academic persuits in Sabadell and later at the Municipal School of Art of Sant Cugat del Vallès, where she has lived since 1994.
While continuing with her professional activity locally, she advances in the art world and exhibits in galleries in Barcelona, New York, London, Vitoria, Lleida, Granollers, Terrassa, Sabadell, Sevilla and Oman, in the UAE, among others. She also participates in prestigious international fairs such as St-Art in Strasburg, Salon des Antiquaries in Nancy, Lille Art Fair and Abu Dhabi Art Fair.
Carmen Magem in 1992 made her first collective exhibition, followed until today by dozens of collective and individual shows.
In Magem's collage work, she depicts romance, memory and aesthetics rather than any conventional order for composition of figurative paintings, landscapes or stills. In her body of work she uses drawings and sketches to convey emotion. The addition of color in her paintings is key, bringing a powerful mood which in return play a major role in her paintings. The final technique is oil paint adding a tactile quality from vigorous brushwork and impasto layering.
"Collage attracts me powerfully, seduces me, amuses me and offers me a constant surprise in the creative process. It causes a well-known image to have a thousand different readings and suggest unusual emotions."
"I like to think that my work transmits harmony, a dose of rest and pleasure for the senses, a space where the mind can travel to corners stored in memory and discover a new life, new colors and new light."
